1. High-Speed, Narrow Aperture Photography

You’ve seen photos wherein the subject is in motion but it appears as if it was shot in slow-mo. Or dewdrops splashing on vibrant flower petals, a herd of zebras running in the Savannah, you name it. These types of slow-mo takes are an effect of a camera’s setting to a narrow aperture.

With a narrow aperture, light is able to go through much longer. It can allow the lens to capture images in a much more still-than-average take if the subject in the frame is moving. The general rule of thumb is to select a higher f-stop number such as f/16. An f/8 is also suitable for it.

2. Long Exposure For Night Photography

Night photography can be tricky, even if the subject you’re about to snap a photo of has a few glowing lights on it. Technically, there’s no source of light to illuminate the entire scene. Thus, what’s needed here are long exposures (kind of similar to how we’ve mentioned it above).

So, you need to let light pass through long enough to capture as much as you can because of the lack of illuminance. It’s called Shooting in low-light. Furthermore, we advise you to utilize a low ISO for a lower sensitivity to light. You’ll thus be able to avoid accidental black images.

Some professional photographers also like using bracket exposure. They set the camera sturdily on a tripod and take a row of photos. Some will be purposefully underexposed, others, not so. The purpose is to hit the bing-pot and choose a picture that has the best exposure possible.

3. Fine-Tuning Macro Photography

This one’s quite common and can be easily done with a phone (honestly). In contrast, there is pro-techniques simple to apply when shooting with a DSLR. Give much attention to stabilizing your camera’s depth of field.

In its almost-verbatim definition, DOF is the distance of the farthest and nearest subjects within a frame that are normally sharp when in focus. The thing about it is that you don’t have to go to your camera’s settings to find DOF. Hence, no need to be distracted by this move.

Alternatively, it will be good to have an eye for it. You should note what part of the frame you want to be in focus and which ones, not so. In fact, manually focusing your camera on your own is a standard move by pros.

There you have it. 3 basic steps that will immediately change your photographing style dramatically… and beautifully, might we add.
