Underwater photography is basically the act of taking photos while underwater. It can generally be done either while scuba diving or while snorkelling, but is often done in other ways, most often while diving on the sea surface, on top of submerged objects, in a submarine, or remotely operated by remotely controlled underwater vehicles, or by autonomous underwater cameras lowered from above. These photos are amazing to look at and very professional. As underwater photographers know, the main reason you want to take an underwater photo is that it’s really hard not to enjoy it. Of course, when taking photos underwater, there are also a few things that will help, such as gloves and goggles, a quality underwater filter, and of course the right camera.
About Underwater Photography Cameras
In the past, underwater photography cameras were large, bulky pieces of equipment which used huge lenses that zoomed in and out extremely fast. Nowadays, the most professional underwater cameras tend to be compact and relatively inexpensive, using interchangeable lenses. Usually, the lenses are not very big, as the average lens on the market today is only about 20mm in diameter, although some are much larger. They are extremely sharp, however. And most have a macro mode, which enables them to focus closer to objects, which is a great quality if you want to take close up photos of flowers, for example. But if you want a macro shot of an object that’s way above the water, you’ll need a different lens.
Most people think that macro lenses are better than wide-angle lenses, since the former enables a much wider field of view, similar to what a close-up photographer would achieve with their camera. This is not true, however. The reason why you can get a wider-angle shot more easily is because your subject is closer to your lens, making the effect more natural. But with a macro lens, because you’re zooming in close to the object, you tend to get a much smaller shot. This is not a problem with most objects, but there are some objects that tend to stand out, such as stones or other large objects underwater.
Tips To Take Underwater Photos
Some underwater housings, particularly the red housing types, are equipped with a hard outer ring to aid the stabilization of the camera. However, even if this ring is present, a lot of cameras still tend to shake when you take photos of moving objects. This is why most camera manufacturers include some sort of inner ring, which stabilizes the camera during filming so that shaking is minimized. The inner ring is typically made out of rubber, which is why it’s usually placed right at the front of the camera, next to the locking mechanism.
Another important consideration is the availability of the strobes and lights. Strobe systems can be installed on some cameras, while others are not. These strobes should be easily visible, whether you’re looking through the viewfinder or through the eyepiece. A well-illuminated area may not be the best place to put the strobe, and so the focus light should be located somewhere else.

The fourth underwater photography tip pertains to the lighting system. It is common for photographers to utilize flash units to provide ambient light for their underwater images. However, this is not recommended for good underwater images. Because you don’t want to cut short the duration of your underwater photos, you should use either soft brights or high powered lasers.
Finally, you should not use the macro lens in your underwater photos. The reason behind this is because the macro lens will distort the underwater image. As opposed to a fixed lens, the macro will distort whatever you are trying to photograph underwater, including the underwater objects. The only exception to this rule would be if you are going to be using a very powerful strobe, such as a Nidocular strobe.
When taking your photos, you should always aim to expose the camera to the same amount of light. If you expose too much light, you will get images that have washed out colors. On the other hand, if you expose the light too little, you may end up with images that lack depth. One of the most recommended products for shooting underwater is called Nissen Hvy Color Correcting Film. This is a special type of film that works great in bright sunny conditions. It can be applied after you take your pictures and will restore any color corrections that may have been made during your photo shoot.
